Germany: Police deploy water cannons to disperse Antifa protesters in Leipzig

Riot police used water cannons to disperse Antifa representatives and supporters holding a demonstration in support of left-wing attack suspect Lina E. and against decriminalisation of their movement in Leipzig on Saturday.

The rally turned violent as protesters lit up fires, threw rocks and firecrackers towards officers, and formed barricades blocking several roads.

Officers were seen taking a few protesters into custody.

Lina E. and her co-defendants are accused of having carried out violent attacks on right-wing extremists in Saxony and Thuringia, with Lina alleged to be the head of the militant left-wing extremist group behind the assaults.

The court proceedings in the case are ongoing and are expected to last through at least the spring of 2022.

Die Bereitschaftspolizei setzte Wasserwerfer ein, um Antifa-Vertreter und -Anhänger zu vertreiben, die am Samstag in Leipzig eine Demonstration zur Unterstützung der linken Anschlagsverdächtigen Lina E. und gegen die Entkriminalisierung ihrer Bewegung abhielten.

Die Kundgebung wurde gewalttätig, als die Demonstranten Feuer entzündeten, Steine und Feuerwerkskörper in Richtung der Beamten warfen und Barrikaden bildeten, die mehrere Straßen blockierten.

Beamte nahmen einige Demonstranten in Gewahrsam.

Lina E. und ihren Mitangeklagten wird vorgeworfen, gewalttätige Angriffe auf Rechtsextremisten in Sachsen und Thüringen verübt zu haben. Lina E. soll die Anführerin der militanten linksextremistischen Gruppe sein, die hinter den Angriffen steht.

Das Gerichtsverfahren in diesem Fall läuft noch und wird voraussichtlich mindestens bis zum Frühjahr 2022 andauern.
