Recorded 24 June, 2020, this conversation brings together two old acquaintances, American-born Swedish Fluxus artist Ken Friedman and New Zealand’s highly-regarded intermedia artist Philip Dadson.

Together they reflect on their shared commitments to the anti-materialist and collaborative ethos associated with Fluxus that underpins their six decades of art making, which includes their joint contributions to Dadson’s 1971 Earthworks, a ‘composition’ for film and audiotape realised simultaneously at fifteen locations across the globe. Topics discussed include artists associated with Fluxus, such as George Maciunas (1931–1978), Dick Higgins (1938–1998), Christo Vladimirov Javacheff (1935–2020) and George Brecht (1926–2008), and contemporary artist Tino Sehgal (1976-).

Ken Friedman (1949, New London, Connecticut) joined Fluxus in 1966 as the youngest member of the group. He worked closely with artists and composers including Dick Higgins, Nam June Paik, John Cage and others. Friedman was instrumental in establishing Fluxus West. Designed as a gathering point for Fluxus-related activities in the western states of America, it extended its reach to Germany and the UK in the late 1960s and 1970s.

'Ken Friedman: 92 Events' and three other exhibitions were being installed at Adam Art Gallery Te Pātaka Toi as New Zealand went into lockdown due to Covid-19 on 21 March 2020, and were subsequently staged from 2 June - 16 August 2020. The conversation was recorded while global travel was restricted from three locations: Kalmar, SE (Freidman), Auckland, NZ (Dadson) and Wellington, NZ (Cleland).
